STOCKPILE GRAZING CALCULATOR
Stockpile grazing is a highly advantageous forage resource in times of drought or as an alternative source for winter/early spring grazing. It allows forages to be grazed at maturity or post-seed set and encourages more root biomass than under normal grazing systems.
Some Notes On Using This Calculator:
The stockpile grazing calculator is very similar to the summer-grazing calculators, except that we treat the pasture forages as stored forages (as with crop-residue grazing, corn grazing, swath grazing, and bale grazing).
Utilization rates are similar to those of pasture-based calculators, where the desired amount of forage for animals to consume is around 50% of the available forage. Even if you’re grazing old, dead forage that isn’t going to grow back until spring, it’s important to leave enough soil armour behind to protect both the soil and the plant crowns beneath.
